925 Silver vs 14Kt vs 18Kt Gold: Which Metal Should You Choose?

925 Silver vs 14Kt vs 18Kt Gold: Which Metal Should You Choose?

The diamond gets the attention, but the metal decides how a piece feels, how it wears and how much it costs. At ORNIVAJEWELS every design is made to order in 925 sterling silver, 14Kt gold or 18Kt gold, each in white, yellow or rose. Here is how to pick.

What the numbers mean

  • 925 sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver mixed with other metals for strength.
  • 14Kt gold is 58.5% pure gold. The rest is alloy metals that make it harder.
  • 18Kt gold is 75% pure gold, so it has a deeper colour and a heavier, more luxurious feel.

White, yellow or rose?

White makes a diamond look extra bright and icy, and is the most popular choice for engagement rings. Yellow is warm and classic and looks beautiful on Indian and darker skin tones. Rose is soft and romantic, made with a touch of copper. The colour never changes our price, so choose what you love.

Our recommendation

  • Engagement ring worn every day: 14Kt gold.
  • Bridal set or a lifetime piece: 18Kt gold.
  • Earrings, pendants and gifts on a budget: 925 sterling silver, still set with real lab grown diamonds.

Whichever metal you choose, a little care keeps it shining. Read our jewellery care guide, and if you have not decided on the diamond yet, start with lab grown vs natural diamonds.

Frequently asked questions

Is 14Kt or 18Kt gold better?

14Kt is harder and better for daily wear, especially rings. 18Kt contains more gold, so it has a richer colour and costs more. Both are solid gold.

Does 925 sterling silver tarnish?

Sterling silver can slowly darken when exposed to air, moisture and chemicals. Wiping it with a polishing cloth and storing it in a sealed pouch keeps it bright. See our jewellery care page.

Does the colour (white, yellow or rose) change the price?

No. At ORNIVAJEWELS the price depends on the metal (silver, 14Kt or 18Kt) and the diamond size. White, yellow and rose cost the same.

Can I wear lab grown diamonds in silver every day?

Yes. The diamond will not scratch or fade. Silver is softer than gold, so take it off for the gym, swimming and housework to keep the setting in shape.
